Graham Potter has endured a dismal start to life at West Ham.

The Irons supporters were excited when the former Brighton man was appointed to replace Julen Lopetegui, with their club teetering above the relegation zone.

Potter ultimately guided them to safety but many expected more than a 14th-place finish in the Premier League under the ex-Chelsea man.

Potter to face West Ham exit if improvements are not made

Exit speculation has rumbled on at the London Stadium outfit after the miserable start to Potter’s stint with the Hammers.

TV commentator Ian Darke believes that Potter could face the sack if the situation does not improve rapidly, citing the nature of the modern game.

MORE WEST HAM STORIES

Speaking exclusively to West Ham Zone, he said: “Let’s not get away from the fact that this season has been a massive flop for them, they have just been stuck in a vacuum, it is just a nothing season, they just seem to be swimming in a sea of apathy.

“The big hope is that Potter really gets them going and they will be firing again and challenging for the European places.

“They have got to have good players around the place, with a bit of shrewd summer business, you would think they should be at least challenging around the top half of the table.

“That has been their more recent history, it was under Moyes, there is no two ways about it, they have lost their way since he left.

“If you get to November, December time next season, and West Ham have not made progress, I think Potter may start to come under pressure, there is no question about that.

“I mean it is the way of modern football, they need a much improved performance in terms of points and position, otherwise, people will start to wonder if he was the right appointment.

“It is a game of snakes and ladders, being a football manager and you cannot afford to hit two snakes in a row, he was regarded as one of the bright young things, he has come back into this job and people still expect quite big things.

“He still has things to prove, this is a pivotal job for him, if he makes a big success of it in the end and gets West Ham back into Europe, people say, well, Chelsea was just a blip, he wasn’t given a chance.

“If he fails again at West Ham, the verdict is going to be, well maybe he was overrated all along, it is harsh, but that is the reality of it.”

West Ham should keep faith with Potter

The East London outfit must keep the faith with their manager, he has not even had a transfer market to turn around the failures of Lopetegui and Tim Steidten from last summer.

David Sullivan should trust that Potter can turn the situation around and take the Irons towards European qualification, if he is backed properly.

Failure to support the 50-year-old in the transfer market would not give optimism to supporters ahead of the new campaign.
