The Boston Celtics have an offseason ahead of them that’s filled with questions and likely difficult decisions surrounding their roster.
And one insider in anticipating some moves over the summer.
“They’re going to make trades. The Boston Celtics will have a much different roster next season, potentially,” ESPN’s Shams Charania said during his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Tuesday. “They’ll definitely have a different roster. The question is just how severe as far as the movement is going to be for them."
Charania noted the Celtics “can’t really trade” Jayson Tatum, who’s not only injured and will likely miss most of next season, but he’s also the face of the franchise. But he believes teams will have interest in Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis and Jaylen Brown.
“The Celtics are going to have to identify what value can we get for each of these players? Which player does it make sense to trade?,” Charania said.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported earlier this week that the Dallas Mavericks are expected to explore a trade for Holiday as they search for guard depth after trading Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving tearing his ACL.
If the Celtics were to move both Brown — who’s dealing with a meniscus injury that might require surgery — and Holiday’s contracts, they’d be under the second apron. But it’s unclear if Brad Stevens would think that return would justify trading away someone of Brown’s caliber — especially going into a season without Tatum.
The Celtics won’t be the only team expected to be busy during the offseason. In fact, Charania thinks this might be quite the active summer.
“I think this offseason might be the craziest ever,” Charania said.
