Carolina Panthers: Key Offensive Starter Out Until Training Camp

The Carolina Panthers’ starting tight end, Tommy Tremble, battled a nagging back injury throughout the 2024 season, which cost him five games, and he also dealt with a hamstring injury and a concussion earlier in the year. The injury didn’t prevent him from having his best statistical season, hauling in 23 receptions on 32 targets for 234 yards and two touchdowns in 11 starts. The Panthers awarded Tremble with a two-year, $10.5 million extension worth up to $16 million and $8 million guaranteed.

The Panthers kicked off voluntary organized team activities on May 27, 28, and 30 before a short break. They will return on June 2, 3, and 5. Once OTAs finish, the team will transition to mandatory minicamp, which runs from June 10 to 12.

Tommy Tremble was one of the few players who did not participate on the first day of OTAs. It turns out that Tremble underwent back surgery last week.

During Tuesday’s press conference, via Joe Person of The Athletic, Dave Canales gave an injury update on Tommy Tremble. Canales said that Tremble underwent successful back surgery last week and is expected to miss the remainder of spring practices. He is expected to start rehabbing for the start of training camp and is expected to start 2025 on the PUP list.

Panthers spokesperson clarifies: Tommy Tremble will be rehabbing for start of training camp. He’s expected to start on the PUP list. No timeline for his return to game action, but not expected to be season-ending. https://t.co/5h1VAlXVUN

Ja’Tavion Sanders‘s role will increase with Tommy Tremble out. Sanders had a solid rookie season, taking over for the injured Tremble and Ian Thomas, playing the second-most snaps, and recording the most receiving yards by a tight end on the team. He hauled in 33 receptions on 43 targets for 342 yards and one touchdown in eight starts.

Their fifth-round pick, Mitchell Evans, will also see his role increase. Evans spent the last four seasons with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, taking over as the starter in the past two seasons and recording 77 receptions for 903 yards and five touchdowns in 45 career games. He hauled in 43 receptions for 421 yards and three touchdowns in 2024.
