Virginia Tech basketball: Big news as Tobi Lawal is returning for 2025-26

After the 2024-25 season, Virginia Tech forward Tobi Lawal indicated he planned on testing his NBA draft stock while maintaining his college eligibility. Lawal made it clear: Either he’d be in the NBA next season, or back in Blacksburg.

On Tuesday, the news was official: Lawal was back in Blacksburg.

[Here’s a statement](https://hokiesports.com/news/2025/5/27/tobi-lawal-announces-return-to-virginia-tech) from head coach Mike Young:

“We’re excited to have Tobi back in the maroon and orange,” Young said. “He approached the draft process the right way — with maturity, determination and an eagerness to grow. The feedback he received will only elevate his game, and we’re thrilled about what’s ahead for him and for our program.”

From the same statement, Lawal also spoke of returning to the Hokies for another season.

“I’m thankful for the opportunity to explore the draft and learn from the experience,” Lawal said. “It gave me a clear view of the areas I need to keep improving–fine-tuning my all-around game, gaining experience from more game reps and challenging myself to guard the opponent’s best player every night. I’m excited to be back at Virginia Tech with my teammates and coaches to keep chasing our goals.”

This is a huge move, even if expected for Young. Lawal transferred to the Hokies from VCU before last season and quickly became Tech’s top player. A native of London, England, Lawal started 30 games for the Hokies last season and averaged 12 points and seven rebounds per game, and shot 56% from the floor.

Lawal joins Jaden Schutt, Tyler Johnson and Ben Hammond as returnees from last season’s team, which will also features transfers Izaiah Pasha, Jailen Bedford, Amani Hansberry and a four-man freshman class.

The Hokies remain in contention for elite international prospect Neoklis Avdalas. Avdalas could end up among the top 40 picks in the NBA draft. Virginia Tech is a real possibility if he decides to play college ball.
