Over the last week, the Milwaukee Brewers have welcomed back a trio of pitchers. Back in the big leagues is DL Hall, Aaron Ashby, and Aaron Civale. Now, they also have some clarity on potential return dates for Jose Quintana and Brandon Woodruff.

Quintana, a veteran southpaw who got off to a tremendous start this year, has been sidelined as of late due to a shoulder issue. On May 27 he began a minor league rehab assignment where he threw 71 pitches over four innings, allowed six hits, walked one, and struck out three batters. He is expected to return to the Brewers in the coming days and potentially pitch this weekend against the Phillies or early next week against the Reds.

On the other hand, Woodruff, whose MLB return has already been delayed due to ankle tendinitis, is slated to throw in a minor league game on May 28. If all goes well, he will make a second rehab appearance on June 3, but instead of in Appleton, WI he will do so in Nashville, Tennessee. This means a return to the Brewers could happen as soon as June 8 against the Padres, but potentially June 9 or later against the Braves. Either way, both the series against San Diego and Atlanta are at home in Milwaukee.

Who will be the odd man out of the starting rotation?

With so many starting pitchers returning, corresponding moves will have to be made. Already, on more than one occasion, we have seen the Brewers unpopularity option Logan Henderson down to the minor leagues. According to David Gasper at Athlon Sports, Chad Patrick could be the next victim after all of these veterans get healthy.

Patrick has three minor league option seasons remaining. Quinn Priester is the only other current starting pitcher with a minor league option remaining, though he has just one. Freddy Peralta and Aaron Civale are vested veterans that can’t be optioned down, and neither can Brandon Woodruff or Jose Quintana. All four of those pitchers are proven big league starters and, as (Pat) Murphy noted, they’re not going to tell them they won’t get a spot because of Chad Patrick.

With Hall, Ashby, and Civale already rejoining the big-league roster, and clearer timelines now emerging for Quintana and Woodruff, the Brewers’ pitching staff is finally starting to come back into form.
