A look at the players likely and less likely to leave Chelsea this summer ahead of a Champions League campaign.
A big summer transfer window awaits Chelsea as they look to prepare their squad for Champions League football. After Wednesday night’s Conference League final, the Blues will switch their focus to next season and preparing for what they hope will be a European run and a Premier League title push - or at least significant progress on that front.
Players likely to leave
Benoit Badiashile
Badiashile has struggled for appearances this season, making only five Premier League appearances. Asked about his future last week, he said: “I don’t know if I will stay or not but I’m here at Chelsea so we will try to win and that’s it.” Chelsea are likely to sign another centre-back this summer, and it’s likely Badiashile will pay the price.
Christopher Nkunku
Nkunku has been left hugely frustrated by his lack of opportunities relative to his potential and the size of Chelsea’s investment. The forward has started just nine games and he is likely to move on to find more regular football elsewhere.
David Datro Fofana
Fofana has not convinced Chelsea between his time at the club and time out on loan. It would be a big surprise if they didn’t cut the 22-year-old loose this season given it’s apparent he doesn’t meet the club’s standards.
Players likely to stay
Guiu has struggled with injury this season, and that’s a shame. This season might have been the best opportunity for him to make his breakthrough, but there is still hope. Maresca has spoken very positively of Guiu and he appears keen to give him a chance. Chelsea are only likely to sign one striker this summer, and that means Guiu will likely get his chance.
Trevoh Chalobah
Maresca won’t admit he made a mistake by sending Chalobah out on loan, but he did. Chalobah has been excellent since returning to the club, and his performances mean it is very unlikely he will leave the club this summer. Maresca has said of the English defender: “I think Trev, since he’s back with us in January, he’s doing very well. He’s playing games, he’s helping us, he’s defending when he needs to defend.”
Mykhailo Mudryk
Mudryk’s situation is very complicated - and indeed unclear. We have had few details over his suspension for the alleged use of banned substance or substances. The legal process is ongoing, but what that means is that Chelsea cannot sack him - not that they would given the huge fee they paid for him - and they certainly can’t sell the winger while he is suspended. Whatever Mudryk’s future holds, it’s highly unlikely it will be resolved to the point of a departure by the time the summer window ends.
