Report: Former Manchester United goalkeeper on the verge of first managerial job after retiring in 2022

Ruben Amorim will be staying at Manchester United but many other clubs are making managerial changes this summer.

Manchester United’s season is over and Ruben Amorim has much to ponder.

United beat Aston Villa 2-0 on the final day of the Premier League season, but still finished 15th in the Premier League table.

That just isn’t good enough and European hopes were extinguished when United lost to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final.

Amorim is staying at Old Trafford, but the pressure will ramp up if results and performances don’t improve early into next season.

Managerial changes are being made elsewhere, and one former United ace is now set for a first move into the hot seat.

Lee Grant set for first managerial job

We have seen so many cult heroes emerge at Old Trafford, but Lee Grant must be the most unlikely of them all.

United signed Grant from Stoke City in the summer of 2018, snapping him up under Jose Mourinho.

Grant was signed as homegrown cover in United’s goalkeeping ranks and only ever made two first-team appearances for the club.

Grant, bizarrely, took on fourth official duties in 2021 and ended up becoming a popular figure despite his lack of playing time.

David De Gea loved Grant, praising him as an ‘unbelievable guy’ as he announced his retirement in 2022.

Coaching started to become appealing and Grant completed his UEFA A coaching licence before leaving Old Trafford and joining Kieran McKenna’s coaching staff at Ipswich Town.

Grant has played a key role in Ipswich’s rise and is now set for a first managerial job of his own.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon claims that League One side Huddersfield Town are set to appoint Grant as their new manager.

Huddersfield are understood to have received interest from experienced candidates but are set to choose Grant instead.

The Terriers missed out on the League One play-offs and will be looking for Grant to inspire a promotion push next season.

That is a fascinating move and United fans will pay close attention to how the former stopper fares in his first managerial job.

Former United men in management

Grant is far from the only former United man in management across England’s top four leagues right now.

In fact, United youth coach David Hughes left the club to become Newport County boss just last week.

Michael Appleton, Mark Hughes, David Moyes, Mark Robins, Steve Bruce, Darren Ferguson, Michael Carrick, Richie Wellens and the aforementioned McKenna himself are all in management across the Premier League and Football League.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is still in charge of Leicester City at the time of writing but is expected to leave the Foxes after their relegation from the Premier League.

Grant is now set to join that list and may yet fancy asking United for players on loan as he seeks to take Huddersfield back to the Championship.
