Fabrizio Romano: Former Everton player set for shock new role as the next Ajax manager

Everton certainly made the right decision in changing managers back in January.

With the curtain now drawn on the 2024/25 campaign, the work of David Moyes on Merseyside can truly be appreciated.

The 62-year-old completely transformed Everton’s fortunes, with the Blues finishing the season in 13thplace.

What is perhaps most impressive is the points Everton won under Moyes were enough for survival on their own.

That goes to show just how much of a difference the Friedkins saw from their major decision at the start of the year.

Moyes will now be hoping to be financially backed in this summer’s transfer window.

But for one former Everton player, his managerial career could be about to start with the shock appointment as Ajax manager.

Liverpool have given the former Everton defender permission to enter talks with the Eredivisie side.

Negotiations are already believed to be advanced with the Reds already looking for a replacement as the deal looks ‘likely’.

Heitinga made 140 appearances for Everton during his time on Merseyside but that did not stop him making the move to Anfield as a coach.

His time with the Reds has been short-lived with the Premier League-winning coach now set to be promoted to his first-ever managerial role.

Everton enjoy last laugh over Heitinga

A lot was made of Heitnga’s move to the red half of Merseyside last summer to join up with Slot.

Some Liverpool fans even made a banner to mock the Evertonians over the move, but he is set to leave after just one year.

Clearly, he is a coach who is very highly regarded considering he is set to become the new Ajax manager.

That is a prestigious role to take on as your first managerial job.

However, he will be hoping for more success than what former Liverpool coach Pepijn Lijnders had after leaving to become the Red Bull Salzburg boss.
