Manchester United is said to have reportedly agreed in principle broadly to take 22-year-old centre-forward Liam Delap to Old Trafford this summer. Delap spent last season on loan at Ipswich Town, where he scored 12 goals. But, after Ipswich Town’s relegation out of the Premier League, he is free to find another club.
The Red Devils are ready to trigger his £30 million release clause. That became active due to Ipswich’s drop to the Championship. Utd have also locked in personal terms with the player, showing serious intent to get the deal done. However, despite making all the right moves, Utd still haven’t wrapped things up. And Delap is yet to make his final call.
Chelsea have entered the race and could spoil Utd’s summer plans. Blues manager Enzo Maresca is also monitoring the forward’s situation at the moment. The club can offer one major advantage, Champions League football. That might just turnout in their favour. Meanwhile, Everton have also shown interest in the player. But, Chelsea are currently seen as main competition for Manchester United to land the young striker.
Delap began his senior footballing career at Manchester City. Then, he went to Ipswich for a price around ÂŁ20m. In addition, City included a 20% sell-on clause, and a ÂŁ40m buy-back clause. But, they are not likely to activate that before this summer.
Red Devils are trying to secure Delap’s move for Ruben Amorim’s re-shaped squad for the next campaign. But, they’ll have to wait on the striker’s decision. That call could shape their attacking options for the next season.
