Report: Man Utd hope they've won race to sign Southampton starlet after talks, Wilcox pushing…

Manchester United are leading the race to sign highly-rated Southampton defender Harley Emsden-James this summer, MailOnline has revealed.

The Red Devils are reportedly ahead of Premier League rivals Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham in the chase for the promising 16-year-old defender, who could join United for around £1m in compensation.

A number of top-flight clubs have been tracking Emsden-James’ progress in recent months, but United are now hopeful of landing the ‘brilliant’ centre-back in another smart deal for the future.

Ruben Amorim’s side welcomed Arsenal teenager Ayden Heaven in a £1.5m deal in January, while the likes of Sekou Kone and Chido Obi-Martin bolstered their academy ranks last year.

According to MailOnline, United believe they have an advantage in the race for Emsden-James through their technical director Jason Wilcox.

The English executive previously worked for Southampton before moving to Old Trafford last year, and his connections at St Mary’s could be crucial in the pursuit of the 16-year-old England youth international.

Man United are anticipating a busy start to the summer transfer window, as they are close to announcing Matheus Cunha as their first signing.

The Red Devils are now in talks with Wolves over the final details of the £62.5m deal, which will place Cunha among the top 10 most expensive arrivals in the club’s history.

The Brazilian forward is expected to sign a five-year deal upon arrival, with an option for a further year.

United are likely to bring in two more forwards after Cunha and are keeping tabs on Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo as another potential signing.
