After a long period of courting spanning years, Bayern Munich have all but conceded defeat in their pursuit for Florian Wirtz. One of the brightest German youngsters in the Bundesliga is to head for England to don the Liverpool red. A combination of a trusting coach, a great environment at the club along with a drive to test himself in new waters has led to this shock in the transfer market.
As Bayern are still recovering from the stinging blow of losing Wirtz to Liverpool, more details emerge of the transfer hijack of the hottest German talent on the market. It was previously reported that a clear and convincing vision from Pool’s coach Arne Slot along with great memories from Anfield convinced Wirtz to snub Munich for Merseyside.
Wirtz’s statement
Now, Wirtz himself has come forward to give his perspective on the transfer dilemma. In an interview with Sports Illustrated( as captured by @iMiaSanMia), Florian Wirtz said, “I’m quite lucky to have so many excellent clubs right on my doorstep and to now be able to play for one of the best clubs in Germany and Europe. I have big respect for the guys here in Leverkusen, who come from South America or Africa, for example, and leave their families and environment behind for their careers. It’s definitely tempting for me to leave my comfort zone at some point and experience something new. I know the football dressing rooms well enough and am convinced that I would quickly find my place anywhere.”
To be fair, in Wirtz’s eyes, proving himself in a new environment may seem the bigger and more adventurous challenge. However, as one legend in Thomas Müller bids farewell, it should be reiterated that cementing oneself as a legend in and a European legend from Germany equals it or is perhaps an even bigger feat.
