Ranking the Top 5 Chelsea Goalkeepers of All Time

5. Bill Robertson

We start off with a youth graduate who became the number one goalkeeper for a decade. Robertson was called up by the club for the 1950/51 season and remained their first-choice goalkeeper until 1960 when he moved on to Leyton Orient.

He made over 200 league appearances for his side and kept 40 clean sheets, including one on his debut against Liverpool. With a decade of evidence backing him, Roberton is a worthy way to kick us off.

4. Ed de Goey

Ed de Goey had the unenviable task of being the Blues’s shot-stopper at a time when they weren’t vying for any league titles but his ability between the sticks helped them win some major trophies during his tenure.

In 1999/2000 he was almost unbeatable in a campaign that saw him win the FA Cup while keeping an astounding 27 clean sheets in 59 appearances across all competitions. De Goey was a big part of the club’s rise to prominence pre-Abramovich and deserves to be remembered as one of the elite players in his position.

3. Thibaut Courtois

Despite his rather contemptuous exit it’s difficult to deny the Belgian’s ability while he was the top option for Chelsea. His time with the team was marked with success, winning golden glove awards and the league title in impressive fashion. He was part of a defence that kept some very impressive defensive records, conceding less than a goal per game on average in multiple seasons.

His best campaigns where he kept 16, 17, and then 19 clean sheets in almost back-to-back terms is one of the best stretches in club history and if the number one entry to this list didn’t exist it’d put the Belgian firmly on track to be one of the top two shot-stoppers in team history. His abrupt and early exit means he won’t ever get a chance to climb much higher but one cannot deny his impact.

2. Peter Bonetti

Boasting over 700 appearances for the side Peter Bonetti’s longevity gives him a very strong case to be one of the best Chelsea goalkeepers of all time. When just looking at league numbers, his most impressive display came in 1962/63 when he played over 3,500 minutes and let in just 36 goals, keeping 16 clean sheets along the way, a record that stood until the year 2000 for most in a season for a Blues goalkeeper.

He had a few other seasons that neared that greatness, keeping 14 clean sheets in 1970 and another 14 in 1972. His abilities between the sticks enabled the squad to win the FA Cup, a league cup, and the European Cup Winners Cup.

1. Petr Cech

There’s no debate. It would be nigh on impossible to unseat Petr Cech as the best goalkeeper in team history. He was the rock-solid wall behind the greatest Premier League defence in history, he pulled off heroics in Munich to secure a first-ever Champions League trophy, he won multiple best goalkeeper and Golden Glove awards while becoming the most decorated shot-stopper in Chelsea history.

He finished his time with the Blues with simply ludicrous accomplishments and stats like conceding just 393 times in 494 appearances, keeping 228 clean sheets in that time. He holds the club record for most clean sheets in a season with 28, he is also third on that list with 26. In fact, Cech makes up half of the top ten for most clean sheets in a campaign for the team.
