Birmingham City discuss Aston Villa forward as potential transfer target

Birmingham City have internally discussed Aston Villa starlet Louie Barry as a possible target, Give Me Sport has said.

Birmingham City are heading for the Championship and plan on putting their sizeable financial backing to use. BCFC have made no secret of their ambitions plans for the future and are sure to have lofty targets in the transfer market.

The Blues spent well to fund their record-breaking League One season and will hope many of the players signed over the past year can help them make an impact in the second tier too.

Numerous targets have already been linked, and one ambitious name has been mentioned in a fresh report from Give Me Sport.

They claim that Birmingham City have internally discussed Aston Villa’s talented forward Louie Barry as they weigh up summer targets.

Villa are ready to hand the 21-year-old another chance in Championship football after an injury-hit stay at Hull City and several clubs have been alerted as potential destinations.

While BCFC have discussed Barry internally, Derby County are highlighted as serious admirers while West Brom and Coventry City want a goalscoring forward, though it is not concretely said that the Villa man is a target.

It also remains to be seen whether Barry would entertain a cross-city move from Villa to the Blues given his family’s close affiliation with his current team.

Getting back on track

Barry’s form over the first half of the 2024/25 campaign put his name in plenty of headlines. The Aston Villa prospect starred with Birmingham City’s League One rivals Stockport County in his second stint with the club.

On the step up to the third tier, he notched 15 goals and three assists in 23 games for the Hatters, playing as a winger, attacking midfielder or striker under Dave Challinor.

As such, Barry’s move to Hull City was very much deserved and there were high hopes for his step up. However, after four appearances and in just his second start, a knee injury hit and brought an early end to his campaign.

Next season, he will be out to get back on track with regular minutes key in a bid to return to his lethal best.

An ambitious target for Birmingham City

There is no doubt that Birmingham City have the finances to get a loan deal for someone like Barry done.

However, their interest is ambitious because of the club he plays for. Barry is viewed as a top prospect at rivals Aston Villa and while players have transferred between the two before, not many have been from Villa families like Barry is.

As such, it might be hard to see him pulling on BCFC blue next season. The forward will not be short of options though, nor will Barry be the only forward on their radar.
