Jadon Sancho back up plan falls through

Manchester United are set to face a double blow when it comes to the future of Jadon Sancho as both their first and second options of offloading the far look unlikely to go through.

In a bid to reboot his career, Sancho left United last summer on loan, joining Chelsea for the season.

The intention at the time was for a temporary move to become permanent with an obligatory buy of £25 million coming into effect at the end of the season.

The only requirement to trigger the buy was for Chelsea to finish above 15th place in the Premier League, and with a fourth-place finish for the London-based side, they’ve easily triggered this clause.

However, for some time now it’s been suspected that Chelsea will choose to pay a £5 million fee to get out of the obligatory buy, instead of making his move permanent.

Given his inconsistent performances at Stamford Bridge, it’s unknown which way Chelsea will go, with a decision set to be made following their UEFA Conference League final against Real Betis.

However, should Sancho return to Old Trafford, United’s back-up plan to sell the former England international appears to now be on the rocks.

Erik ten Hag appointment affects Manchester United selling Jadon Sancho

It’s emerged recently that with Florian Wirtz set to join Liverpool this summer, Bayer Leverkusen are looking to Sancho as his replacement.

The 25-year-old is regarded as a proven Bundesliga star given his 53 goals and 67 assists in 158 games over two stints with Borussia Dortmund.

However, this link may now be as good as gone with Leverkusen appointing Erik ten Hag as manager, replacing Xabi Alonso.

Sancho and ten Hag had an extremely public bust up during their joint spell at Old Trafford, leading to Sancho being exiled to Dortmund on loan for half a season.

When Sancho returned last summer, he featured minimally in ten Hag’s pre-season tour squad, however found himself on loan once again rather than featuring in the Dutchman’s long-term plans.

As such, it’s highly unlikely that ten Hag would agree to signing Sancho for Leverkusen, and whilst he won’t have any authority over recruitment at the German club, Leverkusen’s recruitment team will surely have the pair’s fractured relationship in mind.
