Aston Villa qualified for the Europa League this season
Aston Villa qualified for the Europa League this season
Aston Villa’s season ended in bitter disappointment, but it was another strong campaign under Unai Emery.
Despite failing to qualify for the Champions League - due in part to a significant refereeing error - Villa finished just two points short of their 68-point tally from last season. They also reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League and the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
Villa lost only one match at home all season and won eight of their final 10 Premier League games.
Here are the player ratings for the season...
Emi Martinez
Martinez made some miraculous saves - most notably in the memorable win over Bayern Munich and the draw with Juventus - but didn’t deliver the consistent performances Villa fans have come to expect. He kept eight clean sheets in the league, though only three came in the first 27 games. 7
Robin Olsen
Olsen made five appearances in all competitions: four in the league and one in the FA Cup against West Ham. He delivered a standout performance in the clean-sheet win over Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium in March. The 35-year-old has since left Villa on a free transfer to join Malmö. 6
Matty Cash
Cash’s error at Old Trafford will overshadow what was otherwise a steady season. After struggling with injuries early on, he kept Andres Garcia and Axel Disasi out of the side in the final two months. 6.5
Andres Garcia
Signed from Levante in January, Garcia largely impressed in his 10 appearances across all competitions. His only major misstep was a misjudged back pass in the draw with Liverpool. 6
Axel Disasi
Disasi made a strong start - particularly shining in the win over Brentford, where he was arguably man of the match - but his form dipped after a difficult outing at right-back against Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City. 6
Lamare Bogarde
This was Bogarde’s breakthrough season. He started several early games, including the Champions League tie against BSC Young Boys. He signed a new contract in April but wasn’t named in any matchday squad for the final 10 league fixtures. 6
Aston Villa's Ezri Konsa (left) and Bayern Munich's Harry Kane battle for the ball
Ezri Konsa
Konsa enjoyed another strong campaign. His 92.9% pass completion rate ranked fifth in the Premier League, and only two players bettered his 80% success rate in tackling dribblers. 8
Tyrone Mings
Villa went unbeaten in the 14 Premier League matches Mings played. His recovery from a serious knee injury was remarkable - even he admitted he surprised himself. 8
Pau Torres
Torres' ball-playing ability ranks among the best in his position, but his defensive weaknesses were exposed too often this season. 7
Lucas Digne
Digne remained one of Villa’s most consistent performers. He delivered 19 crosses into the box - the seventh most in the league - and contributed seven assists across all competitions. 7.5
Ian Maatsen
Maatsen displaced Digne in the latter part of the season and is likely to be the first-choice left-back next term. He impressed in key wins over Nottingham Forest, Newcastle, Fulham, Bournemouth, and Tottenham. 7
Boubacar Kamara doubled Aston Villa's lead against Tottenham (Image: Getty Images)
Boubacar Kamara
Kamara plays a role few others can replicate, making it vital for Villa to secure him on a new contract. 8.5
Amadou Onana
Onana had an up-and-down first season. He started and ended well, but injuries hampered his progress mid-season. He still shows great potential to become a key player under Emery. 7
Youri Tielemans
Villa’s Player of the Season. Tielemans was a standout performer in around 80% of Villa’s games, seamlessly replacing Douglas Luiz. 9
Ross Barkley
Barkley made valuable contributions despite a season-disrupting injury early in the year. He scored winners against Leicester and RB Leipzig, and an equaliser against Crystal Palace. 6
John McGinn
Arguably the most underrated member of Emery’s squad. Always available and highly versatile, McGinn was man of the match in both legs against PSG in the Champions League quarter-finals. 8
Marco Asensio
Asensio scored eight goals in his first 10 games across all competitions. However, after missing two penalties in a 3–0 win at Southampton in April, his confidence seemed to dip. Still, he netted crucial goals during the season. 7
Morgan Rogers (Image: Getty Images)
Morgan Rogers
Before the season, I tipped Rogers as one to watch - not just at Villa, but in the Premier League. He delivered with 29 goal contributions, and it arguably should have been 30, had his disallowed goal at Old Trafford stood. 9
Jacob Ramsey
Ramsey missed December due to a hamstring injury but stayed fit otherwise - a positive sign. However, he has yet to return to his best form and needs to contribute more goals. 6.5
Leon Bailey
Bailey’s dramatic drop in form was surprising. Last season, he was one of the Premier League’s most electric wingers, but this term he scored just one league goal. A summer exit seems likely. 5
Donyell Malen
Despite limited starts - just two in the league - Malen still scored three goals and looked sharp in most of his cameo appearances. He’ll be pushing for more minutes next season. 6.5
Ollie Watkins
Watkins broke Villa’s Premier League scoring record with 16 goals and added eight assists, taking his total contributions to 31 across all competitions. That’s 73 goal involvements in 107 matches since the start of last season. 8
Marcus Rashford
Rashford showed flashes of brilliance during his loan spell, even keeping Watkins out of the side for a time. Unfortunately, a hamstring injury before the FA Cup semi-final ended his season prematurely. 7
