Ruthless from Slot: Liverpool “prepared” to let title-winning regular leave alongside Gakpo

Liverpool are reportedly “prepared” to let a prominent Liverpool player leave in the summer transfer window, amid other doubts about Cody Gakpo’s future.

It’s all go at Anfield currently, with top-quality names such as Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez strongly linked with moves to the club.

Meanwhile, Gakpo has been mentioned as an option for Bayern Munich, with the Bundesliga champions seeing him as a possible alternative to Wirtz.

Speaking to Football Insider, former scout Mick Brown claimed that Liverpool and Arne Slot are willing to sell Luis Diaz this summer, assuming Wirtz comes in:

“Liverpool are prepared to let Diaz go if they bring in a replacement. Barcelona are one of the clubs who have been looking at him. Liverpool have always been open to letting him go, but they needed a replacement first because they didn’t want to lose him without somebody coming in.

“It’s one thing deciding that you can improve on a player and need something better, but it’s another thing bringing in somebody who’s better. They’re the Premier League champions, but there are a few players they feel can be upgraded.

“They’ve been working in the background for a while to identify these replacements and it looks like they’ve settled on Florian Wirtz. It’s a huge deal for them, so they’ll be pushing to get it over the line. That will then allow them to let other players leave and clear a bit of space in the squad.”

Will Liverpool sell one of Diaz or Gakpo?

It would be a huge surprise if Liverpool sold both Diaz and Gakpo before next season, considering how important they have been in the Reds’ Premier League title win.

That said, if Wirtz does join in a stunning move from Bayer Leverkusen, Slot may find it difficult to find room for all three, in terms of keeping them happy at the same time.

For that reason, cashing in on either Diaz or Gakpo makes sense, with Liverpool supporters likely to be divided over who the stronger option to keep is.

They scored 13 and 10 goals respectively in the league in 2024/25, but the latter is three years younger, so cashing in on Diaz could arguably make slightly more sense.
