Liverpool’s Premier League trophy parade was marred by horrifying scenes when a car drove into crowds of people – and Peter Cunningham, a man who has been wrongfully accused, has implored the police to release the identity of the offender.

Arne Slot and his men, despite winning the title with four games to go, had to wait until the end of the season for their full-blown celebrations to commence and the Anfield faithful turned in their droves on Monday to join in with the title-winning festivities.

In the aftermath, the likes of former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, Jamie Carragher and LeBron James have all released emotional messages. The ever-lovable Klopp, on Instagram, wrote: “My family and I are shocked and devastated."

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who are injured and affected. You’ll never walk alone.”

The shocking incident that took place just shortly after 6pm on Monday is, in the words of Assistant Chief Constable of Merseyside Police Jenny Sims, being treated as an isolated incident – and, as a result, not as an act of terrorism.

As revealed yesterday by Detective Chief Superintendent Karen Jaundrill, the driver of the Ford Galaxy has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and drug driving – and that he was remaining in custody as a series of interviews were taking place.

Elsewhere, father-of-three Peter has also spoken to the Liverpool Echo after he was wrongfully accused of being connected to the incident. His picture and name have been posted on social media – with many claiming that he is the man in custody.

Pleading with the police to release the identity of the offender out there, he said: “I’m stressed out, I don’t need it all. It’s a bad thing that has happened and the police need to do something about it and get his name out there. Other people’s names have been shared. It’s got nothing to do with me, I’m in work right now and the man they arrested is in custody.”

“I was getting phone calls off family members and friends saying ‘what the hall is going on?’. These YouTubers and people on social media are just sharing it to make money.”

On a FaceTime call with BBC News, Peter reiterated his point. “I’m in work – the police need to give the name out because I’m getting accused. Family members and friends are ringing me and asking me, but it could get a whole lot worse. The police need to do something.”

In terms of the original post where Peter’s identity was linked to the crime, the 54-year-old has messaged to ensure that it was deleted to alleviate further provocation. The account holder, per reports, obliged and their post has now been taken down.
