Manchester United’s post-season tour of Asia is officially underway, with the squad having landed in Malaysia on Monday ahead of their two matches this week.

The Red Devils will take on an ASEAN All-Stars XI on Wednesday before heading to Hong Kong for a clash against the national team on Friday as part of their commitment to international fan engagement.

It’s their first outing since a Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur capped off a season many fans would rather forget, especially with the club finishing 15th in the Premier League table.

Despite their dismal form, Manchester United have publicly backed manager Ruben Amorim, who endured a nightmare start to life at Old Trafford in his debut campaign.

And now, one of the club’s former managers has shared a message of encouragement with the under-pressure Amorim.

Jose Mourinho, speaking to Sky Sports, offered some perspective and hope for the 40-year-old, drawing on his own coaching journey to ease the sting of United’s collapse.

“I read some quotes from him [Amorim] saying he’s happy he came and already had these six months.

“When I went to Porto the same thing happened.

“I went in January and we had a difficult six months, we struggled even to qualify for UEFA Cup.

“And then we saw what happened,” Jose Mourinho said.

The Special One also acknowledged Tottenham’s triumph and how it could be a turning point for their long-suffering supporters.

“I was divided because on one side I love United and I have a fantastic relationship with Ruben.

“But on the other side I saw Sonny [Tottenham captain Son Heung-min] crying with the cup… also for Tottenham fans it was a special feeling.”

Mourinho added: “The impact is obvious. Tottenham play Champions League and of course, for Mr Levy, the millions the Champions League gives, for him it’s the best news.

“For the fans, the players and Ange, it’s a title.

“Yes, the game was not amazing but they made history for Tottenham because Tottenham didn’t have a trophy for so many years.”

“From what I read – just what I read – the impact on United of course is huge in the sense of for how many years has United not been involved in any European competition.

“But at the same time it looks like they are supporting Ruben, they are giving him time and conditions to go forward.”

With United expected to back Amorim in the summer transfer market and the manager remaining positive about his future, Mourinho’s words could mark a crucial turning point in the Portuguese coach’s Old Trafford rebuild.
