Uva basketball legend Ty Jerome enters free agency after breakout season

Virginia Cavaliers legend Ty Jerome is making a name for himself in the NBA, with offseason free agency expected to land him a new, bigger contract.

After two seasons with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Jerome is now entering unrestricted free agency, which could land him almost anywhere in the league—or, anywhere that can afford him, while the Cavs may be unable to re-sign Jerome with his anticipated salary increase and the franchise’s salary cap.

So, what makes the Virginia national champion so desirable?

In the 2024-25 regular season alone, Jerome averaged 43.9% shooting from beyond the arc, 12.5 points, 3.4 assists, and 1.1 steals per game, in an average of only 19.9 minutes of playing time.

But nothing beats his postseason debut against the Miami Heat—when he dropped 28 points and shot 62.5% from three. And yes, that included his occasional pull-up from the logo.

Jerome later ended Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Pacers with another bang: 21 points, three rebounds, eight assists. But, the postseason spark didn’t last. The 121-112 Game 1 win against the Pacers led to Jerome’s first playoff start in Game 2, where he contributed a quiet two points, two rebounds and three assists in the Cavs’ one-point loss.

While certainly not his game, a hard loss for the Cavs on the same night as Jerome’s headlining struggles may have emphasized his role in the team’s success. His performance, at least partially, determines team outcomes.

Still, his numbers dwindled in the final three games of his postseason, closing with 11 minutes, eight points, and two assists in Game 5.

A quiet postseason exit for Jerome, however, has not overshadowed his breakout season. As a free agent, several teams are rumored to be eyeing the former ‘Hoo and the 2024-25 Kia Sixth Man of The Year finalist (although Celtics guard Peyton Prichard ultimately beat out both Jerome and and Malik Beasily of the Pistons for the award).

Jerome has made himself a valuable reserve player—but who knows how much longer he’ll be coming off the bench. With his three-point range and quick-hitting assists down low, Jerome’s statistics are only echoing the excitement he brings to the arena. Not to mention his nearly perfected mid-range floater.

He makes it look as effortless as he did in Charlottesville five years ago, with crazy euro steps, laser passes, and some of the most nonchalant three’s you’ll ever see. He’s just fun to watch.
