Florian Wirtz breaks social media silence as Liverpool transfer edges closer

Florian Wirtz has taken to social media amid speculation that he could be donning a Liverpool shirt come next season. Discussions are in full swing between the Reds and Bayer Leverkusen about striking a deal for the 22-year-old talent.

Leverkusen's valuation of the German international is believed to be in the region of $170 million, but the two clubs could reach a middle ground on the price, depending on how negotiations unfold. Bayern Munich was once the frontrunner in the race for Wirtz’s signature.

At a fan event held at Bayern Park this Saturday, Bayern president Hainer was overheard stating: "Max Eberl (Bayern director of sport) informed me that Florian Wirtz is probably leaning towards Liverpool. I can't say how things will transpire with Leverkusen."

In spite of all the speculation about his future, Wirtz has casually shared an image on Instagram showing him lounging leisurely while on holiday.

Following up, Wirtz also republished a highlight reel from the Bundesliga's account onto his Instagram story, showcasing his impressive tally of 10 goals and 12 assists within Germany’s premier division for the 2024/25 season.

In a conversation with the German edition of Sports Illustrated earlier this April, Wirtz prioritized his career aspirations over financial gain, insisting his choices are influenced by what furthers his professional ambitions best.

During the interview, he commented: "When I moved from Cologne to Leverkusen, I didn't think for a second about what my salary would be. I was only interested in what would be best for my career.

"I don't think about how much money I have in my account, or how much I could earn in the future. The sporting perspective is much more important than money. My parents would be angry if I ever gave money priority."

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso lauded Wirtz as 'one of the best players in the world' and expressed confidence that he will make a wise choice regarding his next step in football.

He remarked: "Flo is one of the top players in the world. He is world class. Flo has a very mature mind. The people around him, his parents, they want the best for him.

"They are in a very important moment of his career. Whatever he does, I am really close to Flo and I will be happy for him. Let's wait a little bit. It's normal in football that there are rumours, especially with such a special player.

"There were rumours (in the past), there are rumours today and there will be rumours in the future. You need to deal with them and not take them too seriously."
