Ruben Amorim has been warned he may not have long to impress at Manchester United next season. The Portuguese manager has suffered a torrid time at Old Trafford since taking the reins in November.
United have won only eight Premier League matches after the 40-year-old replaced Erik ten Hag and experienced their worst-ever finish, ending the season in 15th place. The Red Devils also fell to a disappointing 1-0 defeat by Tottenham in the Europa League final in Bilbao, denying them a place in the Champions League next term.
Despite a miserable campaign, Amorim has been backed to continue in his role by the club's owners after reportedly flying to Monaco for crunch talks in the wake of the loss to Spurs. However, ex-United and Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster still thinks Amorim will not last long after voicing doubts about his ability to turn the club's fortunes around.
The former England international also accused him of being too candid in interviews and providing players with "excuses" for their poor performances. "Amorim just constantly comes out and he's too honest, he's too emotional and he's too open," Foster said on his Fozcast podcast.
"I think it gives the Man United players excuses. It gives them a psychological excuse to not produce and to not come up with the three points at the end of the game. If they don't get off to a good start [next season], which I don't see how they can, I think he's gone after a dozen games."
Amorim expressed his regret at how United's season turned out after their final game against Aston Villa. Addressing fans at Old Trafford from the pitch, he said: "First of all, I want to apologise. It was really disappointing with the team. Secondly, I want to say thank you.

"We are very grateful for your support during the season. I know it was really hard to support us in many games. But now we have to make a choice or we stay stuck in the past. Because this season is in the past, it's over.
"We fight each other or we stick together and move forward. Six months ago, in my first three games in charge, with two victories and one draw, I said to you a storm is coming. Today, after this disaster season, I want to tell you the good days are coming."
United have already started preparing for a busy summer as Amorim looks to revamp his squad. Matheus Cunha is on the cusp of joining the club in a £62.5million move from Wolves, while Ipswich Town forward Liam Delap has also been identified as a key target.

The release clauses of Cunha and Delap combined amount to £92.5m, which have influenced United's swift decision-making. However, the club will also need to move players on to raise funds if more new signings are to be realised.
Amorim acknowledged the fact when asked how United's lack of Champions League status would impact his summer plans. Speaking at a press conference during the club's post-season tour of the Far East, he said: "Without Champions League, we don't need a big squad and we can control the squad in a better way. Then we have a plan that is to bring some new players, of course.
"But our big plan is to improve the team that we have and is to improve our academy, because I think that is the future. It's not going to change so much because we have the financial fair play rules. We are not allowed to do much in this summer, even with Champions League, so we are prepared for that."
Amorim added: "It's important to stick together. We are going to struggle, it is not going to be everything right away but I have a feeling and I see the team improving and that is the most important thing."
