“In The Right Environment”: Milwaukee Brewers Linked To Pittsburgh Pirates Andrew Heaney In…

The Milwaukee Brewers have a 28-28 record so far this season. They are tied for third place in the National League Central with the Cincinnati Reds, but there is a chance that the Brewers could make a trade later in the season.

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich (22) is swarmed by his teammates after hitting a walk-off grand slam home run during the tenth inning of their game against the Boston Red Sox Tuesday, May 27, 2025 at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Brewers beat the Red Sox 5-1 in 10 innings.

One team in the division who could potentially have a fire sale is the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pittsburgh has a 20-36 record so far this season and they are in last place in the National League Central division. One pitcher who could be on the trade block is Andrew Heaney.

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Andrew Heaney (45) attempts to throw out Arizona Diamondbacks’ Gabriel Moreno during the third inning at Chase Field on May 26, 2025.

R.J. Anderson of CBS Sports listed potential MLB teams who could be sellers and buyers at the MLB trade deadline in 2025. He also listed some players who could potentially be on the move as well to some other teams. One player that the Pirates could be moving off of is Heaney. Anderson thinks that the Brewers could be a potential fit for him. He said,

“Heaney’s season is a Rorschach test for how one evaluates pitchers. On the one hand, he’s done a good job of keeping runs off the board with his west-east approach. On the other hand, his strikeout rate has cratered by two batters per nine innings compared to last season. Teams are more likely to concern themselves with the second part of that matter, which is notable given they already viewed him with skepticism (he had just over $5 million). Even so, there’s only so much starting pitching to go around. Heaney is a tolerable back-end option, particularly in the right environment.”

Along with Milwaukee, some other landing spots for him could be the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants. Heaney has pitched in 11 games so far this season for Pittsburgh. He has a 3-4 record with a 3.41 ERA. In 60.2 innings pitched, Heaney has given up 50 hits and 23 runs. He has also walked 24 batters and struck out 44 batters. His WHIP is 1.22.

The 33-year-old pitcher has an expiring contract. This would be a nice cheap option for the Brewers to potentially acquire. They would not have to give up much for him. Heaney may not be the only player that Pittsburgh will unload for prospects at the MLB trade deadline.
