Brentford make approach to Liverpool as they look to beat rivals for Caoimhin Kelleher

Brentford have made an approach to sign Liverpool and Ireland goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, reports claim.

The Bees want to move fast to sign a new goalkeeper as they prepare for life without number one Mark Flekken.

Flekken is closing in on a move to Bayer Leverkusen under new manager Erik ten Hag. Brentford are open to selling to the German club if the price is right.

The 31-year-old still has two years on his contract at the GTech Community Stadium, having joined the club from Freiburg in 2023.

However, Kelleher would be eyed as a suitable long-term replacement, and Brentford have been keen admirers of the 26-year-old for a while.

Kelleher is leaving Liverpool this summer, with the Premier League champions welcoming Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Caoimhin Kelleher wants first-team football

The Irish international has made it no secret of his desire to leave Liverpool in search of regular football.

Moments after lifting the Premier League trophy, Kelleher issued a come-get-me plea to other suitors ahead of an uncertain summer.

He said: “I think I’ve said it before as well that I feel like I’m good enough to be a number one.

“I feel like I’m good enough to play week in, week out – and that’s what I’m going to do.

“This season I was lucky enough to play a lot of games, but it’s definitely something I’m looking at.”

Kelleher has played 20 times across all competitions this season in the absence of Alisson, who endured numerous injuries.

He impressed during his run in the side, ensuring his stock continued to rise. Premier League suitors have certainly taken notice.

Brentford stealing a march on Premier League rivals

If Brentford seal a move for Kelleher, it would be seen as a coup considering the interest in his signature.

Aston Villa have been linked as they seek a replacement for the outgoing Emiliano Martinez. The Argentine gave an emotional farewell to fans in their final home game of the season.

Brighton are another side in the mix. Although that will depend on whether Real Madrid pursue their current keeper Bart Verbruggen.

The other top flight team looking for a new keeper is Leeds.

Manager Daniel Farke is almost certain to look for a new number one having dropped Illian Meslier towards the end of the Championship campaign.

Farke will be busy in the transfer window as he looks to build a squad capable of securing Premier League survival. They have been linked with fellow Irishman Finn Azaz.
