Ruben Amorim has been accused of being "too open" in interviews after making a stark admission over Manchester United's transfer plans.

The Portuguese manager has endured a difficult spell at Old Trafford since taking over in November. Under the 40-year-old's leadership, United have secured only eight Premier League wins after he succeeded Erik ten Hag, culminating in their worst-ever finish in 15th place.

The Red Devils also suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss to Tottenham in the Europa League final in Bilbao, denying them Champions League football next season. Despite a dismal season, Amorim has received backing from the club's owners to continue in his role, following reported crisis talks in Monaco after the defeat to Spurs.

United are gearing up for a summer of change, with Matheus Cunha understood to be close to sealing a £62.5million transfer from Wolves. Meanwhile, some players are expected to be offloaded to generate funds for further signings.

However, Amorim has admitted that any squad revamp could be limited after being quizzed at a press event held as part of United's post-season tour in the Far East.

He said: "It's not going to change so much because we have the financial fair play rules. We are not allowed to do much in this summer, even with Champions League, so we are prepared for that."

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has been told his comments provide players with "excuses" for poor performances

It was a candid moment from Amorim and former United and Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster believes his honesty could be a problem for the club. The ex-England international suggested it had provided players with "excuses" for subpar performances.

Despite having the backing of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and other club executives, Foster also cautioned Amorim that his tenure at United may be short-lived if he fails to impress next season.

"Amorim just constantly comes out and he's too honest, he's too emotional and he's too open," Foster said on his Fozcast podcast. "I think it gives the Man United players excuses. It gives them a psychological excuse to not produce and to not come up with the three points at the end of the game.

"If they don't get off to a good start [next season], which I don't see how they can, I think he's gone after a dozen games." Amorim displayed his remorse to fans for United's awful campaign following their 2-0 win over Aston Villa on the final day of the season.

Speaking directly from the Old Trafford pitch, he said: "First of all, I want to apologise. It was really disappointing with the team. Secondly, I want to say thank you.

"We are very grateful for your support during the season. I know it was really hard to support us in many games. But now we have to make a choice or we stay stuck in the past. Because this season is in the past, it's over.

"We fight each other or we stick together and move forward. Six months ago, in my first three games in charge, with two victories and one draw, I said to you a storm is coming. Today, after this disaster season, I want to tell you the good days are coming."
