The Green Bay Packers had Josh Jacobs as its three-down back during the 2024 NFL season. The plan for Green Bay was not to let him run into the ground.

Green Bay Packers running back Josh Jacobs (8) celebrates scoring a touchdown with wide receiver Bo Melton (80) against the San Francisco 49ers during their football game Sunday, November 24, 2024, at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

They were banking on A.J. Dillon and rookie Marshawn Lloyd to be healthy in 2024, but it turned out not to be the case. Jacobs was a pro bowl running back in 2024 and led Green Bay into the postseason. However, they may need to tone down his carries during the 2025 NFL season.

Zachary Pereles of CBS Sports wrote about who are the 100 most important players in the upcoming 2025 NFL season. Tuesday marked only 100 days to go until the 2025 NFL season. Pereles believes that Jacobs is one of the 100 most important players for the upcoming 2025 season for the Packers, but he believes that Green Bay needs to limit his workload in 2025. He said,

“**Josh Jacobs** was a true bell cow in his first year in Green Bay, racking up 1,671 yards from scrimmage on 337 touches. Can (and even should) he repeat that workload? After he led the NFL in touches in 2022 with the Raiders, he had a down 2023, so Matt LaFleur and Co. must be wary.”

He had 15 rushing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown in 2024 with Green Bay. Can Jacobs repeat the same performance in 2025? Well, he could if he wanted too, but LaFleur will probably have plans for Lloyd to have a major role in the offense. If he can perform, Green Bay will be in good shape.

If not, the Packers are going to have to rely on Jacobs once again for a majority of the workload in the backfield. Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks are the other two running backs on Green Bay’s roster.

Jacobs was sixth in the NFL in rushing yards, was sixth in carries, and was fourth in rushing touchdowns during the 2025 NFL season. He will no doubt be the second most important player on the Packers offense other than quarterback Jordan Love. If Jacobs were to get injured in 2025, it would be a major blow to the Green Bay offense.
