Marcus Rashford is considering his options now that his loan spell with Aston Villa is officially over, but he’s been told a second chance with Manchester United is unlikely as his career hangs in the balance.
The 27-year-old hit two goals and had four assists in 14 appearances for Villa during a loan that was ultimately cut short by injury.
With Villa failing to qualify for the Champions League, it seems the England international will look for other options, despite a reported £40m deal in place for him to move permanently to B6. Barcelona have been tipped as a more likely destination.
But according to talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan, Rashford faces a huge summer in which he will have to confront a few home truths.
Discussing Rashford’s immediate future, Jordan told listeners: “It depends how reasonable Rashford is going to be about the wages he expects to get.
“If he thinks he's going to get something on the way out (of Old Trafford), he can think again. If the reality is he wants to play, as we're so regularly told, then he'll have to take a view on what there is available for a deal to be done that facilitates an outcome for him.”
Fellow pundit Danny Murphy then asked: “When you say a view, you mean take a hit?”
Rashford is under contract at Old Trafford until 2028, a deal that reportedly pays him £325,000 per week.
Jordan responded by saying: “Well, everyone's going to be taking a hit. Everyone's got to do a favour for one another because everyone's indexed in this problem.
“But Marcus has created the problem by his performances. The only reason people want him out of Man United is because he hasn't turned up for Man United.
“Otherwise people would be still looking at Marcus Rashford as the poster boy for the best things about Man United, and he isn't, and that's because of him, not anybody else.
“So he can sit tight there and lose his career. He can sit on his backside and do nothing next year, and miss out on the World Cup, and all of that will play into the narrative of who's going to blink first.”
Murphy added: "Or he’s back for pre-season dynamic and as fit as he's ever been?”
But Jordan responded: “Nothing is ever set in stone, but the reality of the way he created a problem for the manager (Ruben Amorim) and created a circumstance about wanting to leave Man United, I think is a very difficult one for him now.”
