The New York Knicks trailed the Indiana Pacers by double digits at the start of the fourth quarter on Tuesday night, but then they brought it within six points.
It seemed like they might be able to pull off a miraculous comeback again.
In the end, that wasn’t possible, and the Knicks lost 130-121, putting themselves in a daunting 3-1 hole for the series.
Following the game, Karl-Anthony Towns talked to ESPN about what went wrong for his team and how they didn’t have the “magic” needed for a comeback.
“In true fashion to our whole playoff run, we put ourselves in a deficit, got ourselves out of the deficit, and then usually we feel good about us going into a close game in the fourth quarter and showing our resilience. But you get burned if you put yourself in that position too many times,” Towns said. “We think coming into the fourth quarter that we’re going to find that one trick again. We just didn’t have that magic tonight.”
The Knicks and their fans thought New York had what was necessary for a rebounding comeback, but they didn’t.
Towns produced 24 points and 12 rebounds for his team, while Jalen Brunson led the way with 31 points.
OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges were also very helpful, but they just couldn’t close the gap and overcome the Pacers.
The Knicks have been able to rally back from big deficits before, including multiple times this postseason.
But now they will have to do it in an even bigger way.
In order to advance to the Finals, they will have to beat the Pacers three times in a row.
The Pacers rarely ever lose back-to-back games, and teams almost never come back from a 3-1 deficit.
Therefore, this will be the largest challenge of the Knicks’ season.
