Kings pull out of California Classic. Will event come back to Sacramento?

The Golden State Warriors announced plans to bring in three other teams for the seventh annual California Classic.

The Sacramento Kings, who founded the event in 2018, were not one of them.

The Warriors will entertain the Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat and San Antonio Spurs in the summer showcase July 5, 6 and 8 at Chase Center in San Francisco. The Kings will not participate this year, but a source with knowledge of the situation told The Sacramento Bee the event will return to Sacramento next summer.

The California Classic is returning to its original single-site format this summer following discussions between the Kings, Warriors and NBA officials. Last year, the event expanded to a dual-site format with a total of eight teams competing at Chase Center and Golden 1 Center.

The inaugural California Classic was held at Golden 1 Center in 2018. The event features rookies, second-year players and other young players vying for NBA and G League roster spots.

The Kings will send a team to the Las Vegas Summer League, which will be held July 10-20 at Thomas & Mack Center and Cox Pavilion on the UNLV campus.

The Kings do not have a first-round pick in this year’s NBA draft. They will convey the No. 13 pick to the Atlanta Hawks to complete the 2022 trade for Kevin Huerter.

The Kings have not announced whether Devin Carter, the No. 13 pick in the 2024 draft, will be a part of this year’s summer league team. Carter missed summer league and the start of the 2024-25 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn labrum.
