Ruben Amorim says fans in Malaysia gave Man Utd something Old Trafford doesn’t,‘Something we need…’

The post-season tour might just be a money-spinner for some at the end of a wretched season but Ruben Amorim believes Malaysia has already given Man Utd what Old Trafford doesn’t.

Man Utd kicked off their post-season tour with a performance that was a microcosm of their season.

The 1-0 loss to ASEAN All-Stars, a team created from scratch just for this game, summed up the toothlessness of the Man Utd squad as currently constructed.

The youngsters impressed Amorim and that’s a positive, but he curiously found another positive in Malaysia, something that he said he can’t get back in England.

Ruben Amorim gets in Malaysia what Man Utd ‘maybe’ need

Amorim’s brutal honesty has been a fresh change of pace from Erik ten Hag’s constant gaslighting of the Man Utd fans that everything was going fine.

However, by his own admission, Amorim crosses the line sometimes and is too honest for his own good.

Add his recent comments about what Man Utd need to that list because it is a weird thing to say, to put it politely.

After United lost against ASEAN All-Stars, the fans in the stadium could be heard booing off the team, clearly not happy with the standard of football played by the team they paid good money to watch.

When Amorim was asked about the booing, he took it on the chin but made a weird comparison in the process that is unlikely to go down well with the Old Trafford faithful.

He said: “I feel always guilty of the performance of the team since I am here in the first game. The boos from the fans, maybe it is something we need because every game that we lost in the Premier League they were always there. Let’s see for next season.”

Calling out the fans for a lack of support has been done by many managers at many clubs, but lamenting that the fans support the players “too much” is certainly a choice.

Ruben Amorim looks fed up of Man Utd squad

One can’t blame him, but it increasingly looks like Amorim is sending subliminal messages before engineering the gutting of this team.

When he came through the door in November 2024, he always protected his players and tried to create a siege mentality at the club.

Soon, he must have realised that the players he kept backing against the world would turn on him at the first sign of weakness or difficulty.

That has led to a change in tune from the Man Utd manager. Now that he’s overseen a disastrous season, and with no European football next season, he’s preparing to gut the squad.

Urging the fans to effectively boo the players after losses is just an unconventional message to convey that change is coming.
