As per reports, the police took 28 individuals into custody. This included some Spanish nationals who were arrested for violent acts against rival supporters. The protests started on Tuesday evening and continued to Wednesday afternoon, with fistfights and bottle and chair-throwing.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk expressed outrage at the violence, saying:
“Zero tolerance for violence on our streets! I thank the police for their decisive actions against the hooligans in Chelsea and Betis shirts in Wroclaw. We warn you: if necessary, the police will be even more ruthless today!”
The authorities anticipated a crowd of between 70,000 fans in the city, although the stadium capacity is around 45,000. The city has also experienced a strategic closure of roads as well as residents getting warnings against driving.
Enzo Maresca Hunts for First Chelsea Trophy
Chelsea will look to claim their second European title, the ninth overall, and become the first to claim all four European top trophies. Real Betis, with Manuel Pellegrini, want their first significant European title, having reached a European final for the first time in their history.
Speaking ahead of the game, Maresca told the press that the Blues were prepared to beat Real Betis “at any cost”:
“The message in the last 48 hours; we’ve done something important but if we want to confirm we are becoming an important club, we need to show desire to win the game and the title. Tomorrow is a different game, a final, and a game we want to win at any cost.”
