Chelsea and Real Betis fans have clashed in the streets of Wrocław ahead of the Europa Conference League final.

Images emerged on social media of the two sets of fans battling in the streets by throwing bottles and smoke grenades and even being pushed back by police water cannons.

The clashes have taken place over the past 24 hours as the two sets of fans descended on the streets of Poland for the European final.

According to The Sun, most of the ugly scenes unfolded near the fanzone in Wroclaw with riot police forced to defuse the violence. The fighting reportedly spilled over when fans started throwing flares into into each other's camps.

Tensions would escalate and chairs were thrown as local police started to try and regain order by firing water cannons at those fighting.

There have been numerous videos posted on social media of the clashes. In one a group of around five young men can be seen throwing chairs and smashing glass bottles.

While, in another video, a small group of fans can be seen throwing projectiles at another group.

A statement from Lower Silesian Police in Wrocław said 28 people have been arrested today.

"After 5pm on the Wrocław Market Square, in connection with the previous negative behaviour of fans and the clash of several hundred people from both teams, arrests of fans involved in this incident are ongoing," it read.

"The police quickly took action and restored the violated legal order, and now they continue to act so that others can safely participate in this great celebration of sports.

"At this moment, we can confirm the arrest of 28 participants in the incident. No one will escape legal responsibility and the police will react decisively and appropriately to the situation."
