Report: Newcastle United identify new transfer need with underrated player 'expected' to leave

Newcastle United’s summer transfer priorities are no secret.

After failing to land their top targets in 2024, Newcastle United are once again in the market for a right-sided centre-back and a right winger.

Marc Guehi is on Newcastle’s radar again, while Eddie Howe also wants to sign Bryan Mbeumo.

Those positions will be the Magpies’ priorities, as they prepare to return to the Champions League after qualifying on the final day of the Premier League season. Manchester United did Newcastle a favour, and now Howe is set to bolster his squad.

Newcastle United could target new midfielder

Newcastle are also in the market for a goalkeeper and a striker, while another position could become a priority depending on outgoings.

That is according to the Telegraph, who claim that Newcastle United will look to sign a centre-midfielder if one of their current options leaves the club this summer.

The Telegraph add that Sean Longstaff is ‘expected’ to depart.

Sean Longstaff is out of favour at Newcastle United

Once upon a time, Longstaff was the immovable object in the Newcastle United starting XI. The Magpies simply did not know how to win without him.

That has now changed, with the 27-year-old’s last start in the Premier League coming in December.

He has slipped down the pecking order at St James’ Park, failing to get off the bench in five of Newcastle’s last six games of the season. Lewis Miley has featured ahead of Longstaff, with the teenager expected to play even more during the 2025/26 campaign.

While Longstaff was recently called Newcastle’s most ‘underrated’ player by Sandro Tonali, it appears that the local lad’s future lies away from Tyneside.

He has attracted Premier League attention in recent months, with the likes of Everton and Leeds linked with Longstaff. There have even been suggestions that Manchester United want Longstaff, but a move to Old Trafford would come as a major surprise.
