Former Lakers Trade Target Possibly Moving to New Team This Offseason

The [Los Angeles Lakers](https://lasportshub.com/former-lakers-veteran-may-be-kicked-to-curb-by-new-team-after-nba-draft-01jwbqgjs4qt) entered the offseason with several needs on their roster. For Rob Pelinka, that means it is time to get to work, as this is a franchise that values championships and championships alone.

While it remains to be seen whether the organization will make a run at him this time around, future Hall of Fame point guard Chris Paul is rumored to be available again after the San Antonio Spurs were among the big winners of the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery, jumping up to the No. 2 overall selection.

With several young, talented guards already on the roster, the need for Paul may not be as great as it was when he joined San Antonio. Longtime NBA insider Marc Stein elaborated on this in his most recent newsletter.

Chris Paul Could Be on the Move Again This Offseason

----------------------------------------------------

Paul is an unrestricted free agent and will be free to sign with whatever team he pleases once July rolls around. With Stephen Castle, De'Aaron Fox, and, potentially, top draft prospect Dylan Harper in the fold moving forward, the role a veteran player like Paul would seek may not be available.

In no way am I suggesting that Paul can no longer contribute to a playoff contender; his statistics from this past season prove that the tank is not empty. The former Wake Forest Demon Deacons standout appeared in all 82 games this past season and owned averages of 8.8 points, 7.4 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game. Not too shabby for a 20-year veteran.

There are many bigger concerns on the Lakers' to-do list than adding a 40-year-old point guard to serve as a depth piece behind Luka Doncic. The biggest of which is finding a starting center who can be a difference maker on the interior.

However, given Paul's relationship with LeBron James and the cachet he brings to the floor every night, seeing the Purple and Gold make a run at pairing those three together like they attempted to do during Kobe Bryant's heyday wouldn't shock Lakers fans.

We'll have to wait and see whether that is a pursuit Pelinka chooses to make, and if Paul is interested in returning to Los Angeles at this stage of his career.
