Fabrizio Romano has issued the latest on Kobbie Mainoo’s future at Manchester United amid uncertainty surrounding his current contract at the club.

While Manchester United are attempting to act fast to secure some major transfer overhauls this summer, there is also a question of the need to tie future talents down to long-term contracts at the club.

Rúben Amorim is expected to secure Matheus Cunha as his maiden signing this summer, with the club also hoping to bring in Liam Delap and Bryan Mbeumo in the coming weeks, while United also want to sign a new midfielder.

Meanwhile, the Old Trafford outfit are open to bids for high-profile names such as Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Højlund, while Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Jadon Sancho are all expected to depart, too.

However, with Kobbie Mainoo’s contract expiring in 2027 and the player demanding fresh terms to reflect his growing importance in the squad, there are increasing questions surrounding his future.

Romano provides the latest on Mainoo’s future

In the January transfer window, news emerged that Chelsea were eyeing an ambitious move for Mainoo amid the Premier League’s desire to secure one of the best young midfielders in England.

Although no move materialised, it emerged that United would consider bids of upwards of £70 million this summer. If the player does not agree on a new contract with the club soon, they may have no choice but to consider his sale with his current deal set to expire in 2027.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Fabrizio Romano has shed some light on the situation, explaining that Mainoo is not currently in any concrete talks with other clubs. However, this does not mean that bids may not arrive for the 20-year-old later this summer.

“At the moment, no concrete talks [are] taking place,” Romano explained. “The situation has gone quiet. Let’s see if bids come in this summer.”

What is the latest surrounding Mainoo’s contract talks?

The latest reports surrounding Mainoo’s future have revealed that although there is positivity that a deal can eventually be struck on a new long-term contract, the player wants more clarity on where Amorim will deploy him on the pitch.

There is still a financial gap between what United are willing to offer and the wage package that Mainoo would like, with the player said to want around £150,000-180,000 a week in wages.

It is also mentioned that Mainoo’s status as a home-grown player, and therefore one that can be sold for pure profit, is complicating the deal, as it makes the player a more attractive asset to sell.

Although Mainoo was not often used by Amorim last season due to positional uncertainty and injury issues, it’s expected that there will be more space for him in the squad next season. Against ASEAN All-Stars, Mainoo played very well as an attacking midfielder.
