Man Utd’s striker woes have been well documented throughout the season and it comes as no surprise to see them being extensively linked with different strikers across Europe as potential reinforcements this summer transfer window.

Going into another season with Rasmus Hojlund as the only number nine option is the football equivalent of shooting yourself in the foot and surely, Ruben Amorim will be wiser? The Portuguese tactician has different names on his shortlist.

Now, as per ESPN, Man Utd have reached a fee agreement with Ipswich Town to sign talented English striker Liam Delap. The Red Devils have informed the relegated the club that they will meet Delap’s £30m release clause if the player greenlights a move to Old Trafford.

Delap has a lot of potential

Delap, interestingly has a past with Manchester City but he hardly played minutes for the senior team. A move to Man Utd might be enticing as he would get the chance to play regular minutes for one of the top clubs in England, historically speaking.

Chelsea are another club interested in the player, who was labelled “confident”, by Premier League legend Alan Shearer. Here is what he had to say:

“You’ve got a really confident, young footballer who is only going to get better.”

Delap has scored 12 Premier League goals in 36 games for Ipswich Town this season and these numbers are bound to keep getting better as he improves. However, at the current stage of the project that Man Utd find themselves in, this might be a gamble.

Man Utd need a reliable goalscorer who can score goals upfront but the advantage with Delap is that he is available at a dirt-cheap price for a player with his ceiling. The upsides to this signing could be huge and the downside, quite minimal.

It remains to be seen if the Red Devils get Delap to agree to a switch to Man Utd and if that happens, they will have to trigger his release clause. The next few weeks could give more clarity on this transfer saga. Let’s wait and see how it plays out.
