After a dismal season, Manchester United are suffering both on the pitch and in their pockets as the financial struggles of the club continue to grow.
The Red Devils have missed out on Champions League football next season which is not only a huge deal for the lure of the competition, but also for the funding that comes with it.
Had United qualified by winning the Europa League, they’ve be receiving an extra £100 million from ticket sales and broadcasting, as well as prize money.
However, in a time when its needed most, United are facing a season without European football, looking for other options to bring in funds.
Despite the Premier League season ending, United haven’t broken up for summer just yet, with a post-season tour currently taking place in Asia.
As part of the mini-tour, United played ASEAN All Stars in Kuala Lumpur today, unfortunately losing 1-0, and are set to face the Hong Kong national side on Friday 30th May.
However, Andre Onana, Harry Maguire and Diogo Dalot are also doing a meet and greet in Mumbai, India tomorrow as part of the trip set to raise £7.8 million for the Red Devils.
Now, finance expert Stefan Borson has said this might not be the last time we see a tour like this from United.
More tours for Manchester United
Talking to Football Insider, Borson commented: “With matchday plus the prize money from Uefa, you’re looking at about a £100 million loss of revenue.”
He continued: “They will probably somehow manage to squeeze in some extra commercial games.
“So, if you look at what they’re doing this season with these two end-of-season games that are generating let’s say £10 million, they are probably more likely to do that next season as well just to mitigate some of the damage that’s done.
“They may lose £70 million from profit, maybe £60 million. But it’s a very substantial hit of at least £100 million to the top line, but it’s mitigated slightly further down the profit and loss account.”
Unfortunately this could have an impact on player were they to try and do this during the season.
United have already been battling with significant injury crises over the last two season, potentially due to the extensive and hectic schedule of the players with the extent of fixtures they’re playing.
To add significant travel into this as well could be detrimental to the players and as such it’s more likely if this type of tour or commercial games do happen during the season, they won’t be going beyond Europe.
