After an excellent performance in Game 5 to close out the series with the Rochester Americans, a young Laval Rocket team has moved on to to AHL’s final four, beginning a seven-game series with the Charlotte Checkers this evening.
Charlotte had an easier time in the last round than Laval did, sweeping the Hershey Bears in three games. But fatigue shouldn’t be an issue for the Rocket, who have played nine games since the regular season ended on April 19. You could argue that for a team of prospects, the added adversity of needing a full five-game series and the pressure of a elimination game was important experience for Laval in this run.
The Checkers were about on par with the Americans during the regular season in most categories like standings points, goals for, and goals against, so Laval will have some idea of the quality of its opponent, even if it’s one that the organization hasn’t played in a long time.

While their AHL affiliate is taking on the Rocket, the Florida Panthers will be in Carolina looking to do what they couldn’t in Game 4. As was the case in the series with the Maple Leafs, the Panthers were shut out in their first chance to seal the series on home ice. Florida has been dominant on the road in the past couple of weeks, and has that confidence to draw upon for Game 5. But the Hurricanes exorcised their third-round demons last game, finally breaking a 15-game losing streak in the conference finals, and should be a tougher opponent in this game than the previous two at Lenovo Center.
