Mark Schlereth may be a top analyst for FOX Sports nowadays, but he enjoyed a highly successful NFL career when he was a top guard in the 1990s.
The former Washington Commander and Denver Bronco spent 12 seasons (six with each team) and won three Super Bowls. He also reached multiple Pro Bowls with both teams during that span.
As a former guard, Schlereth saw first hand how important an offensive line can be to the benefit of a championship roster.
That is why, on the Take Command podcast with hosts Craig Hoffman and Logan Paulsen, Schlereth commended the current Commanders squad for bolstering their current line.
Especially when compared to what the Houston Texans have done with C.J. Stroud as another young star.
"I think it's a massive step in the right direction for a team that's coming off of one of the greatest gold mines you could possibly tap into in finding a rookie quarterback like Jayden Daniels the way they did," Schlereth said. "And kind of learning from what we saw as that cautionary tale last year with CJ. Stroud and the Houston Texans, where you saw year one, it was great, but covered up some flaws that in year two got exposed when they didn't really do much to go and try and improve the situation in front of and around him."
Washington brought in Laremy Tunsil to cover the left side of the line and drafted Josh Conerly with the first round pick in April's draft.
They may not be as celebrated as the Philadelphia Eagles' group currently is, but it's clear that Washington has done some impressive work to fix their offensive line after years of struggles.
And former players are thrilled to see that.
