The [latest report from Shams Charania](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/25199815-spurs-reportedly-expected-actively-pursue-wing-amid-durant-giannis-trade-rumors) indicates that the San Antonio Spurs may be actively trying to improve their wing rotation this summer. With that being the case, it's entirely possible that Devin Vassell becomes a player on this roster who is expendable.
"I think they're going to be looking very actively to see is there a wing player we can bring in that could take us over the top," Charania said on_The Pat McAfee Show_. To fans who heard him say this, Vassell is probably the first name that came to mind.
Devin Vassell is obviously a very solid player. He's going to give you 15 points per night on solid efficiency while being a decent playmaker as well. But five years into his NBA career, it sort of feels like this is who he is at this point. Nothing more and nothing less.
With that being the case, you'd have to think that the Spurs are going to invest more into their younger pieces with potentially higher upside. De'Aaron Fox has been an All-Star in his NBA career. San Antonio may very well decide to roll the dice on having he, Victor Wembanyama, and their [second-overall draft pick](https://airalamo.com/dylan-harper-cam-johnson-spurs-best-both-worlds) (likely Dylan Harper) lead the way going forward.
Vassell could become expendable — fast
--------------------------------------
Obviously, the Spurs would like to keep all of their guys that they believe in as rotational pieces. That group of course includes Vassell. But given their circumstance and the fact that they're looking to make an upgrade at the wing according to Shams' report, Vassell would seem to be the odd man out.
This report from the NBA Insider also included a note that there was mutual interest between the Spurs and Kevin Durant at this past season's trade deadline in February. If that's the type of deal this team is looking for, they're going to end up making a trade where they need matching salary, and Vassell's contract becomes one of the ones that makes the most sense.
Devin Vassell is currently playing on a five-year, $135 million contract with the Spurs. This is the type of deal that it makes sense to trade when you're getting back a contract like Durant's.
Of course, a lot of fans in San Antonio would be sad to see him go, and rightfully so. Vassell has been a very solid contributor during his time in a Spurs uniform. But if you have a chance to make this type of trade happen, you have to go for it if you're San Antonio.
