The Bears plan to keep Darnell Wright at right tackle — at least for now.
Wright has remained on the right side this offseason even with starting left tackle Braxton Jones recovering from ankle surgery. Kiran Amegadjie, a third-round pick in 2024, and Ozzy Trapilo, a second-round pick last month, have been playing left tackle during OTAs, with the rookie being featured prominently Wednesday.
“We feel pretty comfortable keeping [Wright] at the right side right now,” coach Ben Johnson said after Wednesday’s OTA practice. “So the left side until we get Braxton back in the mix, it’s going to be a little bit of musical chairs.”
General manager Ryan Poles said before the draft that the team was thinking about moving Wright to left tackle. The Bears failed to draft a left tackle prospect with the No. 10 overall pick, though, watching as three were selected with the first nine picks.
Johnson said that putting Wright on the left side remains on the table — but it doesn’t appear to be the Bears’ first choice. Jones should be healthy in time for training camp.
“We’re going to let the plan play out, which is keep him there for the time being and let these guys battle it out on the left side,” he said. “And we can decide to change course whenever we need to.”
