To aid in the recovery of quarterback Deshaun Watson, the Cleveland Browns added four quarterbacks to the roster this offseason. Obviously only one can get starting reps until Watson returns.
That has sparked an interesting competition for now, but ultimately there is a strong chance that Cleveland won't that many signal callers on the roster Week 1.
When will they make that change? That depends on how the guys perform.
At OTAs this week, the Browns coaching staff has observed veteran Joe Flacco, developing youngster Kenny Pickett, and unproven rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders participate in practice.
Cleveland is expected to be diligent in deciding who will win this four-man battle, but one insider believes they'll put a premature end to one of the QB's time with the Browns.
PFT's Mike Florio claims, for some reason, that Cleveland is in a hurry and looking to trade a quarterback before training camp. He picks Kenny Pickett to be that odd man out.
“Put me down for they are going to trade Kenny Pickett before camp," Florio said. "They've been trying to boost Kenny Pickett. There have been some reports about how he’s looked so good in the offseason program. I think they want somebody to call about Kenny Pickett."
Cleveland acquired Pickett in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this offseason after the third-year pro enjoyed a Super Bowl championship as the backup to Jalen Hurts. They gave up a fifth-round draft pick and backup arm Dorian Thompson-Robinson in the deal.
So they will trade Pickett away just months after trading for him? Even though they are claiming he has "looked so good"? Are they trying to make amends for trading for him in the first place?
Speaking for a confused Browns fan base ... it all seems odd.
Even more peculiar is the timing. Rather than allow Pickett as much time as possible to prove himself, Cleveland wants to give up on him before training camp even starts?
Kenny certainly doesn't have the experience and familiarity Flacco does in this system, but let's not forget that Pickett also competing against two rookies who have no taste of real NFL action. Pickett has nearly two full seasons as a starter in this league...
Yes, Cleveland may want to hang on to either Gabriel or Sanders as an investment for the future, but given that Pickett might end up being the winningest answer as a starter, this prediction doesn't fully add up.
