Reed and Jacobs clarify offseason chatter regarding wide receiver room

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) - During the offseason, Jayden Reed and Josh Jacobs each made waves with their reactions to the Packers current wide receiver room.

Last year, the Packers had the highest wide receiver drop percentage in the NFL at 8.1%. In fact, that number is the worst in the last 10 years in the NFL.

This offseason, the front office double-dipped at the position in the NFL Draft, selecting Matthew Golden in the first round and Savion Williams in the third round.

Entering last season, head coach Matt LaFleur faced a question regarding whether or not the team had a defined top option, to which he replied, “I want to vomit every time I hear number one receiver.”

Therefore, when ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported earlier this offseason that following the additions of Golden and Williams, Reed’s agent Drew Rosenhaus met with the front office to figure out what it meant for his client. According to the report, Rosenhaus was assured by the team that the moves “will not affect Reed’s status as its top receiver.”

Given the contradiction between what LaFleur has said publicly in the past and the report from last month, Reed seemed eager to explain what happened when meeting with reporters on Wednesday.

“A lot of people misinterpreted that,” Reed said. “I hired a new agent and we talked about it before even the draft really. He said he was gonna talk to the front office and everybody here to just catch up and make sure everybody’s on the same page. As a new client he told that’s the way he was gonna do it and he did it. Now I don’t know how it got out because it was supposed to be confidential. But that’s how it goes sometimes.”

Reed also clarified that he is willing to do whatever it takes for the team to win and is not worried about his personal statistics.

Meanwhile, Josh Jacobs kicked off the offseason during Super Bowl week by declaring that the Packers need a “proven #1″ on multiple different appearances on radio and TV.

His Packers teammates in the wide receiver room, including Dontayvion Wicks, responded promptly via social media.

With the exchange playing out on social media, Jacobs was asked if he had to mend any fences with Wicks or any of his other wide receiver teammates following the offseason comments.

“Nah man, it don’t affect it at all,” Jacobs said. “I talk to those guys one on one. We have real relationships. Even after the comment I called them and talked to them. For me it’s just about pushing them to want to be great. We got a lot of special guys in that room - a lot of special guys in that room. For me it’s about just trying to see them to see it in themselves and maximize their opportunities because at the end of the day this is what our team needs. I believe in all them guys. Shoot, I seen the way they came in. I mean if you’ve been seeing them in these OTAs, the way they’ve been working, you can tell I definitely lit a little fire under them.”
