Enzo Maresca has revealed that Chelsea have yet to decide Jadon Sancho’s future. The Manchester United loan winger was impressive in the 4-1 UEFA Conference League final victory over Real Betis, netting the third goal in the second half. His name was on the scoresheet as the Blues won their first UEFA Conference League title and finished off their set of all the major European trophies.
Responding to a question on Sancho’s future, Maresca said before the game:
“I don’t know. I said that when in the last weeks you asked me about different players, I always said the same. And the reason why is because it’s the truth. It’s not the moment we have tomorrow, final.
“Then in 24 hours, 48 hours, we’re going to start to talk about the future. But at this moment, there is not any thought or any decision made on Jadon or any different players.”
Sancho’s loan agreement carries an obligation to purchase him for £20 million, plus £5 million of possible add-ons. This would activate if the Blues finished above 14th in the Premier League. Having secured a fourth-place finish, the clause comes into effect.
Nonetheless, Maresca asserted that talks regarding transfers, including Sancho’s permanent transfer, will begin after the Conference League final.
Sancho’s display in the Conference League final, as well as throughout the season, is certainly going to be observed by Chelsea. It will all be part of a decision-making process as they consider their options for the future. However, a decision needs to be made urgently.
Chelsea Need to Decide on Jadon Sancho’s Future Urgently
The Blues are involved in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup in the USA, which starts on June 14. This puts added pressure on making final decisions on the squad.
The competition involves 32 teams, with Chelsea being grouped in Group D with Flamengo, Esperance de Tunis, and another yet-to-be-determined opponent.
The summer transfer window will open on June 1. The Blues would be forced to move fast in making up their minds about the squad, ahead of the Club World Cup and the new Premier League season.
