Leeds United’s preparations for a return to the Premier League are well underway as Daniel Farke looks to build his squad.
The club have already been linked with several names with one of the latest being Sheffield United’s Gustavo Hamer. The midfielder has been a standout player in the Championship this season and is expected to move on from the club after their failure to win promotion in the play-off final at the weekend.
Radio station talkSPORT now report that Leeds are one of two clubs, alongside Everton, who are showing an interest in the 27-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window.
Hamer was named as Championship player of the year for 2024/25 last month. The season saw him score 10 times and provide eight assists in all competitions. His assist for Tyreese Campbell’s opening goal in the play-off final outlined his qualities.
So, if Leeds were to make a move, where could he fit into Daniel Farke’s starting line-up? Here are three possible options:
As a number ten
Hamer’s strengths lie in his creativity, so playing in a more advance midfield role should get the best out of him.
Playing in the number ten role behind the main striker, whether that be Joel Piroe, Patrick Bamford or another new signing. He would hopefully be able to provide the service for the one up front.
If he did play this role, it would see Brenden Aaronson drop to the bench.
A deeper role
Another option for Hamer could be to play him in a deeper central midfield role, which would probably give him a bit more space and opportunity to get on the ball more. He would, however, have to show his defensive prowess too.
In an ideal world, Hamer would play alongside Ao Tanaka. But he could also be a long-term replacement for the midfielder, who has been praised for his performances in the Championship for Leeds this season and could be the subject of interest
Manor Solomon replacement
While his more natural position is in a more central role, Hamer has been mainly playing off the left for Sheffield United this season. He could, therefore, be an ideal replacement for Manor Solomon at Leeds.
The loanee has now returned to Tottenham Hotspur following the conclusion of his loan spell at Elland Road. If Leeds don’t, or are unable to make the move permanent, then they need to find someone to replace him.
Hamer’s performances in the same position in the Championship make him a pretty good option.
