Blow for Liverpool as Real Madrid plotting transfer hijack for Florian Wirtz

[Real Madrid](https://footballtoday.com/real-madrid-schedule/) could make a surprise move for Liverpool target Florian Wirtz and hijack the deal for the player.

The Reds are widely expected to land the Bayer Leverkusen star this summer, but a deal with the German club is not finalised yet.

According to Spanish publication [AS](https://as.com/futbol/primera/wirtz-no-es-imposible-n/), Madrid still believe they have a chance of signing the 22-year-old.

It is said the La Liga titans plan on using their new head coach Xabi Alonso to convince the young attacker to join them.

Wirtz reportedly rejected an offer from Bayern Munich, while Manchester City withdrew from the transfer race after realising the finances involved in a potential deal were enormous.

Liverpool are now thought to be in advanced discussions with Leverkusen for the attacking midfielder. But Madrid could launch a surprise move and that could complicate things for the Reds.

Wirtz has emerged as one of Europe’s brightest young players in recent years. He played a significant role in helping Leverkusen claim a domestic double in 2023-24.

The 22-year-old also scored 16 goals and registered 15 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions this season.

Wirtz would be an excellent addition for Liverpool, but they have yet to reach an agreement with Leverkusen.

The Bundesliga outfit are said to be demanding a huge £126 million for their prized asset. Liverpool, whose most expensive buy remains the £84m spent on Darwin Nunez, are attempting to lower that figure.
