Leeds United dealt blow as Premier League club move for ‘keeper target

Leeds United have followed Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher for some time but Brentford are making a firm move for his signature, reports Lyall Thomas.

Leeds United are preparing for life in the Premier League this summer, after winning the Championship this season. One of the main priorities for LUFC when the transfer window opens is a new goalkeeper.

After a series of errors from Illan Meslier saw him dropped towards the end of the campaign. Daniel Farke’s side had been eyeing Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher to replace the Frenchman but now could be dealt an early blow.

As reported by Lyall Thomas, via his X account, Brentford have approached Liverpool over his availability. Brentford are now in the market for a ‘keeper with Mark Flekken closing in on a move to Bayer Leverkusen.

Reports from Germany have suggested that Flekken has already agreed terms with the German outfit. However, a deal will only be allowed to go through if Brentford can find a replacement despite a fee being agreed.

That could force Brentford to move quickly for the Irish stopper. LUFC are looking into other targets, including Bayern Munich’s Daniel Peretz, who they face rival interest from PSV Eindhoven.

Leeds must make their move

Serving as backup to Alisson at Liverpool, Kelleher has been making a good name for himself over the past few years. Across several competitions, he has shown over and over again that he is ready to be number one.

This summer looks like the time he will finally get his move, and Leeds must not let this opportunity slip away. His contract is up next summer, meaning he could be available for a bargain fee.

Brentford will no doubt put up a stern fight for Kelleher and he could be tempted to move there, considering their established in the top flight. However, LUFC are a huge club, and it is easy to see why he’d lean towards them.

What does Meslier do?

With Leeds United’s priority being a goalkeeper, it leaves Meslier in a strange situation. The Frenchman knows his future will not be as number one at Elland Road.

LUFC could be looking to cash in on the 25-year-old while he is yet to enter his prime. Let’s not forget he was a very promising young ‘keeper not long ago, and likely just needs a fresh start.

A move back to France could be an option for Meslier, who may not see his future in England. It will be interesting to see if he pushes for a move away this summer.
