Liverpool And Arsenal Are Set To Miss On This€95M Centre-Forward–But Is It Really Unexpected?

Julian Alvarez Atletico Madrid

Julian Alvarez had been linked with a return to the Premier League with Arsenal and Liverpool showing an interest in the Argentine international.

Even though he has a successful first campaign in Spain, there were rumours of him looking to leave in the summer because he is unhappy. These reports further fuelled Arsenal and Liverpool’s links with the forward but now, Fabrizio Romano(h/t Football Espana) has made it clear that Julian Alvarez is not going anywhere.

The transfer expert has admitted that even though there is genuine interest from the Premier League Atletico Madrid have no interest in selling him after just one season. Diego Simeone’s side paid €95 million for him to Manchester City and the manager is very happy with the return he’s gotten so far.

Could Liverpool or Arsenal still try to sign Julian Alvarez?

Julian Alvarez has proved himself in the Premier League which is the primary reason why Liverpool and Arsenal wanted to sign him but they would have had to spend more than €120 million to bring him back to England.

The 25-year-old’s contract expires in 2030 which means Atletico Madrid are in the position to quote all sorts of crazy figures, just to make sure that the suitors do not stand a chance.

Yes, Atletico need money to fund their new summer signings but there’s no indication that they need to raise money through unwanted and panic sales. The Spanish side will definitely get rid of some first-team players but Julian Alvarez is not on that list. If Antoine Griezmann leaves, Alvarez will become an even more important figure in the team next season.

The Argentine international might be a top goal-scorer but with so many other options available, it does not make sense for Arsenal or Liverpool to chase him for over €100 million. Gyokeres, Sesko and Osimhen are all available for less than €80 million.

Arsenal might still be able to spend a substantial figure on a new centre-forward but if Liverpool end up signing Florian Wirtz for €150 million, they won’t even think of making a formal approach for Julian Alvarez.
