Saints learn bizarre rule that left Romeo Lavia empty handed in European win

Former Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia had to leave Chelsea's title winning evening empty handed due to the Blues bizarre rule mistake.

Last week Tottenham Hotspur got their title wishes fulfilled, but in reality it was Southampton fans who enjoyed it more. Now, days after that Arsenal banter fest, the Saints have another reason to mock the Gunners based on their city rivals Chelsea's success.

Hours ago, the Blues also pulled curtains on their campaign with a Conference League trophy but that isn't the biggest talking point for the Saints. Instead, the debate is about former Saint Romeo Lavia whose victorious evening with Chelsea ended on a sour note.

So, unlike the usual silverware occasions, Lavia was denied a winning medal which must have left many Southampton fans scratching their heads in disbelief. Firstly, that doesn't has anything to do with the Saints relegation, obviously, and nor with the fact that Southampton overpriced the 24-year-old when they sold him a few seasons ago.

Chelsea's squad selection dashed Lavia's consolation medal hopes

Instead, the Belgian's misery is on Chelsea's part who fumbled a bizarre Conference League rule. So, as pointed out by Football London, Lavia didn't make the cut in Chelsea's matchday shortlist and was ruled out from the showpiece event way before the eventual game began.

And thus, the defence oriented playmaker was sidelined from receiving medals, though, that may change later. But for now, Lavia left the pitch empty handed but by ticking off a collective European dream checkbox.

Ironic isn't it, as players like Luke Shaw have scripted an undesirable tally in European finals despite playing well every time. And then, there are others like Romeo Lavia who get to cherish the trophy lifting scenes while missing out on the medals.

Anyway, let's hope this saga fuels Lavia's confidence and he goes on to win many more honours while also playing a key role in those stages.
