Sunderland have a secured promotion to the Premier League and now need to work on reshaping their squad for next season.
Ajax’s Jordan Henderson has already been named as a target for the Black Cats. Two days ago, we covered claims from the Dutch press which stated Sunderland and Rangers have good chances of securing his services.
Sunderland are set to be the 34-year-old’s next destination, according to Chris Woerts. He has been discussing the midfielder for De Oranjezomer, and Voetbal Primeur have relayed his comments.
According to Transfermarkt, Woerts was Sunderland’s head of marketing between January 2009 and February 2010.
Barcelona have confirmed that Lamine Yamal has signed an improved contract until 2031. When Woerts discussed this topic, he mentioned the England international’s salary and his future at Ajax.
Henderson has over 13 months left on his contract but will leave the Eredivisie club in the upcoming window. He came up through the ranks of Sunderland’s youth system and was with their first team for three years before moving to Liverpool in 2011.
Woerts remains confident the experienced midfielder wants to return to his former club.
“In the Eredivisie, that is a player from Ajax. The Amsterdammers lead the rankings in terms of expenditure. That’s Jordan Henderson. He earns around €4.6m per year,” he said.
“He’s leaving Ajax. I’m sure of that. I’m sure he’s going back to his old love. To promoted Sunderland. Promoted to the Premier League last weekend. That’s where he grew up and he’s going back to his roots.”
