With so many high-profile names linked to Newcastle United this summer, the club will inevitably face tough competition to land top targets.

And with the club not prepared to overpay extortionate amounts of money or wages, we’re more than likely going to miss out on some players whom the fanbase would love to see line up in black and white.

According to a new report, we’ve fallen behind in the race to sign a promising attacker, with a big six Premier League rival now looking set to win the race.

According to [Ben Jacobs](https://x.com/JacobsBen/status/1927797795399847963) and talkSPORT’s Alex Crook, Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap is now closing in on a move to Chelsea.

With the prospect of regular game time as well as Champions League football being high on the striker’s list of demands, it seems a move to Stamford Bridge is the 22-year-old’s preferred option.

Delap has a £30m release clause in his contract and has also held talks with Man Utd and Everton following a sales pitch from St James’ Park, where the presence of star man Alexander Isak may have limited his route to starts.

It will be interesting to see who Newcastle may turn to next up top, with Brighton star Joao Pedro linked earlier linked earlier this week.

But considering the form and quality Howe has been able to produce for all our current English youngsters, it would sting to not see Delap as the next player on that list.

There’s no doubt that Liam Delap has talent and potential to become of the country’s most prolific forwards.

However, it always felt tough to secure the England Under-21 talent with Isak almost certain to limit his route to regular starts.

He could’ve learned a lot from the Swede and Eddie Howe, but it looks like we’ll be forced to pursue another option as Callum Wilson’s long-term replacement.
